Residents Raise Money for Marie Curie
Local Nursing Home Residents raise money for Marie Curie
Compton House STAR group is a recently formed group of residents and staff who meet regularly to discuss what life is like in Compton House. During one of these meetings one of the residents said ‘lots of people do things for us wouldn’t it be nice if we did something for someone else’? They held meetings to discuss what they could do and decided they would like to have a table at Compton House’s annual plant sale and raise money for Marie Curie. What to do was difficult as they felt mobility was often a hindrance, but they eventually decided with some help from relatives and staff on running a bring and buy stall. This project kept them busy for weeks planning and preparing for the big day. They made posters, asked relatives, visitors and staff for donations for the stall, they also arranged a raffle. Joan one of the residents contacted the Marie Curie community fund raising team to obtain leaflets, balloons and bunting. This was a very well planned event, organised with the minimum of help from staff. On the day they worked really hard and were delighted when they discovered that they had raised in just two hours £335. Joan who had lead this event contacted Marie Curie and Kate Holdsworth came along to our STAR group coffee morning to receive the cheque. The residents would like to thank everyone who came along and supported the annual plant sale but particularly their stall which was independently raising funds for Marie Curie. Joan said ’taking part in an enjoyable way of helping others has also brought considerable self-confidence and pleasure to residents’.
